simultaneous perspectives:
expiremental work
At this very moment, all things are happening simultaneously. Any
single instant and location can be viewed from infinite, simultaneous
perspectives. The only medium we have today that comes close to being
able to capture this infinity is a hologram.
In the urban settings that I photograph, visual information is very
dense. As a photographer, I try to tune into as much of that information
as I can and visualize scenes from as many perspectives as I can. I had
pondered how to photograph a scene in a way that would abstractly
emphasize the simultaneity and complexity of visual information. Simply
photographing a busy scene in a literal way would not do it. Then I
began thinking more about how reflections show multiple perspectives of
the same scene. Placing reflections in a photograph is certainly not a
new trick. Photographers are keenly aware that reflections add new
perspectives and make the photograph more interesting. However I think
their use tends to be serendipitous rather than something deliberately
sought out.
I decided I would be deliberate. I would create a series of diverse
photographs in which the reflections played a central role in creating
the imagery. As I explored the possibilities, I found that relying only
on reflective surfaces that happen to be around me couldn't always do
what I envisioned. So I started carrying around sheets of acrylic and
mirrors that would open up the possibilities. Using my makeshift optical
devices along with a vision of what I wanted to achieve, I was able to
create imagery that was frequently unpredictable and startling. More
than just capturing simultaneous perspectives of the same scene, some
photographs seem to capture a kinetic vibrating energy.
All the photographs in this series are single exposures. The only
editing processes I apply in my digital darkroom are manipulations of
tone and color.
This is a work in progress. I will continue exploring the concepts of
information density, hidden information, concurrency, and human
perception.
Need an assistant:
To date I've been using very simple optical devices that I can hold up in front of my camera with one hand. In order to go farther with this work I need to use more complex devices. These devices will be too award to position myself. So I'd like to find an assistance to work with me. Regrettably, I have no money for this project and cannot pay for assistant. If you know someone that might be interested in helping me out, please tell them to e-mail me.
